Dolly Parton has said she’s immensely proud that a $1million (£774,722) donation to her local hospital has helped find a cure for coronavirus.

The legendary country star appeared on The One Show today and spoke about going viral after it was announced that her generous donation was put towards successfully finding a cure.

Talking to Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas, Dolly said: ‘When the pandemic started many months ago, I just kind of felt led to put some money into a programme.

‘Vanderbilt hospital is a wonderful hospital here, and has been so good to me and my family through the years, so I donated a million dollars and they called it the Dolly Parton Covid Fund.’

‘So out of that they actually got more money and it just started developing and they were developing all these wonderful things,’ she continued. ‘So I just found out, like I said today actually that it was for real, that [the cure] was part of the programme that we had started.

‘I’m sure many many millions of dollars by many people went into that but I just felt so proud to have been a part of that little seed money that hopefully will grow into something great and help to heal this world.’

‘Lord knows we need it!’ she laughed.

From the money supplied by the Dolly Parton Covid fund, Vanderbilt Vaccine Center was involved in the recent vaccine candidate created by Moderna, which has reported 95% success rate.

Interim data from the US firm Moderna released earlier this week suggested its vaccine candidate is highly effective in stopping people getting ill and works across all age groups.

It’s said to work in a similar way to the Pfizer and BioNTech candidate that researchers last week declared 90% effective after a separate preliminary trial.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
