According to reports, Downton Abbey will return to the small screen eight years after the series’ conclusion.
From 2011 to 2016, the original period drama series aired six seasons. It followed the Crawley family and their workers as they lived and worked at the magnificent Downton Abbey.
Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, and Dame Maggie Smith all reprised their roles in the first feature, which was based on the TV show that concluded in 2015.
And it appears like the main cast will be back for a future special endeavour.
A source shared: ‘There is a plan which is in development and there is a lot of excitement about.’
The insider added to Mail Online: ‘There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all of the big stars can return. People loved Downton. It became a British institution and it has been much missed since it left our screens.’
We hear that no discussions have taken place as of yet.
The film adaptation, which debuted last year, maintains the theme of the Crawleys accepting change, with Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) encouraged to continue her career as a journalist while still becoming a mother, and the Earl of Grantham learning about cinematic adventures.
While many of these actors were well-known to fans, newcomers to the cast included Laura Haddock, Hugh Dancy, and Dominic West.
Dominic, the Crown’s actor, revealed to the series’ official podcast that it was’very intimidating coming onto a show that’s been going for so long and is such a great sensation and such a tremendous success’.
He added: ‘I’d never been to Highclere before… you go up the drive and you come over the brow of the hill and there it is.
‘It’s like some Disney castle and you can’t quite believe that it’s real. It’s such an extraordinary outline against, against the horizon and… so that was the first sort of intake of breath.’
Downton Abbey is available to stream on Netflix.
