Dr Amir Khan warns we will see another pandemic if we don’t look after nature: ‘It isn’t our plaything’

Dr Amir Khan issued a strong message about what humans need to do to avoid another pandemic.

On Friday’s Good Morning Britain the doctor spoke about the World Health Organisation’s investigation in China to determine the origin of the Covid-19 virus that has devastated the world for over a year.

Dr Amir said he was ‘very worried’ about finding out the origin ‘to prevent things like this happening again in the future.’

He told hosts Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins on the programme: ‘This is a zoonotic virus, it has originated in animal species and somehow moved into humans.

Whether they were the intermediate animal in between, that needs to be looked at. Whether this was a lab leak we really need to look at that seriously.

‘The bottom line for me, and I think a lot of people really, is that the natural world isn’t our play thing to do as we please with.

‘We’ve got to show it some respect and some dignity because things like this will happen again if we continue in the way that we’re going and just assume we can do whatever we want, with whatever creatures, viruses, bacteria we want. They don’t play to our rules.’

He added: ‘We’re in danger of creating another pandemic if we continue this way.’

More than 40million people in Britain have now been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to new data published on Thursday.

The UK Government’s website shows that a total of 40,013,470 have received their second dose of the vaccine – the equivalent of almost 76% of the adult population.

In came after another 104 deaths were recorded in the UK within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
