Dr Hilary and Piers Morgan are on the same page about job titles becoming more inclusive and gender neutral, stating it’s ‘getting ridiculous’.
The Good Morning Britain presenters reacted to a BBC Radio 4 presenter Katya Adler referring to fishermen as ‘fisherpeople’ while discussing Brexit on-air yesterday.
Of course, Piers was raging throughout much of Tuesday’s episode.
When Dr Hilary responded: ‘Midwives,’ Piers shot back: ‘Oh no, not anymore. We can’t be having midwives, they’ve got to go. It’s a two-way street you see.
‘It’s going to have to be midspouses. Sorry I’m protesting, I’m furious, I’m enraged, it’s disgraceful that we call the midwives.
‘We’re going to have to change them. Every midwife will have to change their name to midspouse, that’s how all this works.’
Dr Hilary then suggested: ‘Shall we take the “broad” out of British Broadcasting Company? It is getting ridiculous isn’t it?’
Trying to bring the discussion back to a centered place, Susanna Reid countered: ‘That’s making it ridiculous.’
Agreeing with Dr Hilary, Piers continued: ‘You can’t have “broad” in broadcasting, it’s sexist. [It should be called] the British Dudecasting Company. You can have a broad you gotta have a dude.’
Dr Hilary then stated: ‘I’m just making a point.’
In an attempt to understand where her co-host was coming from, Susanna later reasoned that there aren’t many women in the trawling profession so agreed that ‘fishermen’ would still be an appropriate term.
They later spoke to trawler Ashley Mullenger who said she was more than happy to be referred to as a fisherman and only knew around six other women in the industry personally.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
