Dr Hilary Jones warns five-day lockdown break at Christmas is ‘recipe for disaster’

Dr Hilary Jones has warned that reuniting with family for Christmas amid the coronavirus pandemic will be a ‘recipe for disaster’.

The television doctor joined today’s Good Morning Britain where he discussed reports that families may be allowed to get together for up to five days over the festive period.

‘It’s a recipe for disaster, I’m afraid,’ Dr Hilary told presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.

‘Just look at the figures we’re seeing now, 120,000 cases a day, 600 deaths recorded yesterday albeit after a lag from the weekend. But the numbers are going up.

‘Acceleration is slowing but it’s still an acceleration of numbers.’

Dr Hilary continued: ‘If we come out of lockdown with no strategy to control infection rates, then Christmas is going to be a disaster and we’re going to reap the results of that in February and March.

‘By which time, we won’t have sufficient vaccine rolled out to support the population and we’ll be back to square one.’

Piers responded: ‘The vaccine cavalry is coming, we’re talking six months before we start really rolling out mass vaccines, that’s not that long away.

‘If we in the meantime, just ignore the rules, if we get relaxed about everything, so many people will die unnecessarily.’

Last week, a scientist behind a new coronavirus vaccine said to be 90% effective has said the UK could receive jabs by the middle of December.

Professor Ugur Sahin, co-founder of firm BioNTech, said the vaccine could be rolled out next month, depending on whether the UK regulator licences it in time.

He also stated that this could help the UK ‘return to normal life by the middle of next year’.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
