Dr Hilary Jones ‘worried going forward’ as he slams mass gatherings breaking social distancing rules amid UK heatwave

Dr Hilary Jones has slammed those taking part in mass gatherings after pictures emerged of large groups breaking social distancing rules, following lockdown restrictions easing.

As of Monday (March 29), changes to lockdown rules came into play allowing six people or up to two households to mix outdoors in public spaces or private gardens.

Pictures surfaced of huge crowds gathering together all over the UK in parks and on Brighton beach as temperatures reached 24 degrees, and on seeing them, Dr Hilary criticised those not continuing to stick to social distancing.

‘The pictures speak for themselves… a group of six can’t socially distance if they’re sitting right next to another group of six. When I look at those pictures, I do worry going forward,’ he said on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday.

While he stated that it’s much better for people to socialise outdoors than it is indoors, he warned that if social distancing rules are not stuck to, cases of infection will rise.

‘When you’ve got mass gatherings like that, you’re going to get transmissions of the virus,’ he insisted.

Dr Hilary went on to explain that while 55% of people now have antibodies to Covid-19 and data suggests that ‘serious infections, hospitalisations and deaths will reduce significantly’, he stressed that the vaccination cannot be ‘relied on alone’ and people need to act with caution.

GMB host Ranvir Singh then questioned whether the point of easing lockdown was to ‘test how far we’ve come’.

She said: ‘Isn’t the point to test how far we’ve come? This sort of thing yesterday it’s not ideal, but isn’t it, in a sense, the point of it – not to break the rules but encouraged to go outside.’

Dr Hilary responded: ‘I completely get that, I don’t want to be a kill joy but we have to do this cautiously, we have to look at the science – what have we learnt from previous lockdowns if we ease lockdown too quickly? Nobody wants that.’

His comments came after Dr Hilary previously expressed his concerns over a third wave of coronavirus hitting the UK from Europe.

The medical professional has stated that he doesn’t think lockdown rules should be abandon until 90% of the population has been vaccinated.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
