Drag Race UK: Champion Lawrence Chaney spills the tea on secret advice RuPaul gave off-camera after finale

Drag Race UK champion Lawrence Chaney has revealed the advice RuPaul gave him off-camera in terms of his career.

The 24-year-old Glasgow queen was named the winner of season 2 on Thursday night, beating out Bimini Bon Boulash, Tayce and Ellie Diamond to the crown.

Now with his own web series on the way as part of his prize, Lawrence – who had to temporarily shut down his Twitter due to trolling earlier in the season – has promised he’s in it for the long haul, and made sure to rinse RuPaul for all the advice they could give.

‘In the finale, she asked if I want any advice or anything, and of course I went, “right, let’s get started,”’ Lawrence told us.

‘I asked RuPaul, how did she do it – how did she become the drag superstar before there was this show that she runs? How did she get yourself in a position where TV companies were willing to have her?

‘She said to me, “it’s all about reaping the rewards of things you did 20 years ago”. So she started releasing music in the 90s, and music videos and live performance and MTV hosting gigs, and she is still reaping the rewards of what was work she put in 20 years ago.

‘She said it’s all about the long game. It’s not about the short bursts of that lots of money, gimme, gimme, gimme.

‘It is what is best for this longevity, rather than short bursts, or a cash grab, basically. I think it’s great advice.’

Declaring himself ‘the future Lorraine Kelly’, Lawrence said he plans to focus more on hosting rather than participating shows – though is always open to the opportunity.

However, you would see him on Dancing On Ice or I’m A Celebrity anytime soon.

‘I don’t dance, and definitely not on ice,’ he said. ‘Can you imagine? If Gemma Colin’s fell face first on an ice rink then, imagine what would happen to me! That would be rough.

‘I think also probably not I’m A Celeb because I’d be scared of eating things I don’t want to eat. If it was a McDonald’s every day, fine. But crickets and stuff like that? I don’t know.’

‘I want to be a regular face on TV,’ Lawrence added. ‘I think an interesting thing that I’ve discovered about myself is I am funny, I have an ability to be funny, but I can also tell a genuine story.

‘It’s not like everything I say is a joke, but there is layers to it, like an onion.’

‘I definitely want to move into more of my hosting side of things, what with me being the next coming of Lorraine Kelly,’ he said. ‘I had some ideas of interviewing people, known in the queer scene, and getting to know them a bit more in depth than we know of them. People are viral on TikTok or whatever, we don’t know anything about them.

‘So it’ll be an interesting dynamic to learn more about why they do what they do. Queer nightlife, maybe that’s a cool avenue to go down.

‘But again, I’ve got people to bounce these ideas off so maybe we’ll get into one solidified idea eventually.’

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is available on BBC iPlayer (UK) and WOW Presents Plus (Rest Of World).
