Drag Race UK: Ginny Lemon calls out RuPaul for ranting about H&M at ‘out of work queens’

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Ginny Lemon has hit out at RuPaul for his outburst over a queen wearing a dress from H&M.

In last night’s dramatic episode of season two, the queens returned to the workroom after seven months, when filming was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After Veronica Green dropped out due to a positive Covid-19 test, Joe Black returned to the competition, but ended up in the bottom after her group, Bananadrama, failed to impress in the Ruruvision challenge.

While Joe’s brilliant seaside look – complete with windswept ticket stubs and ice-cream on her face – was praised, she was read for filth over the basic pink dress she wore during the performance, which she admitted to Michelle Visage was from H&M.

In scenes reminiscent to Tyra Banks shouting ‘Be quiet Tiffany’ on America’s Next Top Model, RuPaul seethed: ‘That outfit off the rack was a huge disappointment to me. Just what everyday people do. And you should know that, because you’re a star.

‘And then this goes to all of you up there. If it is from H&M, you better glitter the f*** out of it and make it something special. We’re looking for Great Britain’s next superstar. Don’t waste my time. I don’t want to see any f***ing H&M.’

Ru also called Tia Kofi’s looks ‘regional’ and told her to step it up.

The outburst came after the queens discussed the difficulties in being out of work for seven months, as the pandemic forced bars, clubs and live entertainment venues to close.

Ginny, who walked off stage during the week four lip sync, addressed Ru’s rant on Twitter, suggesting they weren’t too impressed with the host and head judge.

The queen, who is non-binary, tweeted: ‘Screaming and swearing at desperate out of work queens for being too regional and unable to afford costumes after 7 months of jobless despair…

‘Nah babz I’m better off at home fank u very much.’

Season one winner The Vivienne responded: ‘I mean Tbf, you all entered the competition before the pandemic? So everything should have been ready pre stopping filming? Love you so much girl, but that’s a fact.’

Ginny replied: ‘Tbh just creating drama coz it’s Twitter and I’m bored. She didn’t shout at me I was at home eating biscuits. Ru gets it she sent me a moonpig xoxo.’

However, others were on Ginny’s side, with one person tweeting: ‘If I were RuPaul Charles I probably wouldn’t have shouted at a queen and told them to stop being cheap in the same episode that contestants were talking frankly about how Covid had ruined their livelihoods and taken all their work away.’

Another wrote: ‘Screaming at the contestants who make you millions because they aren’t doing better during a pandemic is the LEAST punk thing I can imagine’, while a fan added: ‘Mama ru said f*** your H&M after 7 months of lockdown.’

Michelle Visage, on the other hand, defended their comments, after a critic tweeted: ‘Let’s applaud someone for being rude to people who can’t afford couture handmade gowns in a pandemic. Remember when Michelle and Ru were wearing haute couture in the 90’s…. oh wait.’

She wrote: ‘Hold up. This has NOTHING to do with money. At all. Ever. You do NOT get to turn this into YOUR narrative.’

Michelle then replied ‘indeed’ to a follower who wrote: ‘Ru wasn’t saying people who wear H&M are rubbish, or the clothes are rubbish. He was saying if you are going to compete in the olympics of drag, you gotta make it extra. And you can do that on a limited income.’

After H&M-gate, Joe was eliminated from the competition after losing in a lip sync against Tia Kofi.

Earlier in the show, the remaining queens were asked to vote for whether Joe, Cherry Valentine or Asttina Mandela should return to the competition.

Ru referenced Ginny’s self-elimination, saying: ‘There will be no slice of Lemon as Ginny Lemon chose to take herself out of the competition.

‘Ginny ain’t coming up in here ‘cause she not ready to have herses.’

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK continues on Thursdays and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
