Drag Race UK star Joe Black has hit back at judges RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Graham Norton and Liz Hurley after facing particularly harsh criticism in the very first week.
Black was sent home by Ru despite her renown reputation among the drag scene when the panel did not get her two runway looks – an ode to a British gay icon and a costume which captured the queens’ hometowns.
Dressed in a turquoise sequinned suit and glowing orange wig, Black stormed down the runaway as David Bowie in the icon’s Life on Mars get-up. Sadly, the judges didn’t think she went far enough.
Then she returned head-to-toe in gold like true royalty as she brought Brighton Pavillion to the catwalk.
But the judges were savage and confused by the gold.
Black’s inspired design didn’t land and she found herself in the bottom two with Bimini Bon Boulash; whose tape was exposed, her tuck on full display and in 10-inch heels – not ideal when faced with the daunting prospect of lip-syncing for your LIFE.
After her elimination, Black felt ‘numb’.
This wasn’t the outcome I expected. ‘It is what it is, but I’m proud that I got here. It’s been a short blast, but a blast none the less.’
However, months after being told to ‘sashay away’, Black has expertly hit back at the judges with a picture of inside Brighton’s very gold Pavillion.
‘Isn’t Brighton pavilion beautiful on the inside? Lovely and gold?’ she wrote alongside the image.
While Black was sent packing, Asttina Mandella became the first winner of the series, earning a RuPeter badge for her inspired East London look, complete with a box of fried chicken, and nod to Naomi Campbell.
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK airs Thursdays at 7pm on BBC iPlayer (UK) and WOW Presents (Rest of World).
