RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Cherry Valentine has opened up about the ‘connection’ she shared with guest judge Sheridan Smith when she appeared on the second episode of series two.
Last night, Drag Race UK fans were in for an emotional ride when Cherry, 26, landed in the bottom two with Tayce, the pair performing a lip-sync rendition of Elaine Page’s Memory for their chance to stay in the running for the crown.
In the end, Cherry was chosen by RuPaul as the second competitor to sashay away from the competition, following in the footsteps of Joe Black during the premiere.
While some of the judges had reservations about Cherry’s pregnant runway outfit, West End star Sheridan said that she ‘loved’ the drag queen’s polka dot number and the surprise twist of her ensemble, which saw the performer pop a gender reveal balloon to reveal multi-coloured confetti.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other press, Cherry recalled the bond she shared with the Funny Girl actor, who was pregnant with her first child when the episode was being filmed.
‘To see Sheridan Smith – I literally remember seeing her in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. And I’ve fallen in love with her since,’ Cherry said.
‘She’s fabulous. I really connected with Sheridan, I think, because we were both pregnant at the same time.’
Cherry added that she ‘really appreciated’ how complimentary the guest judge was about her bright yellow look, which received particularly harsh critique from comedian Alan Carr.
‘With the outfit that I wore on the show, I was really happy with it,’ Cherry said, adding that she ‘never got to practise’ her runway stunt.
‘The message I stick by a thousand, million percent and I really appreciated that Sheridan liked it.
‘The other judges, I don’t feel like they liked it as much, but I was really struggling to see how they were picking it apart, because it was just about the concepts.
‘It wasn’t about the look and stuff. I know that’s important, but it was just for me, it was about that message, which I think is really important, especially like on the BBC.’
Last week, Cherry delighted Drag Race UK viewers with her sartorial tributes to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and her hometown of Darlington, which took inspiration from the modern railway.
The drag queen teased that she’ll make sure to share the outfits that she would have worn throughout the remainder of the competition in the coming weeks.
‘I’ll definitely be showing them,’ Cherry confirmed.
‘I’ve literally made them all and they’ve all been photographed and they’re all ready to go. I’m just waiting for the right time.’
Knowing Cherry’s eye for fashion, we’re definitely in for a treat.
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK continues next Thursday at 7pm on BBC Three.
