Eamonn Holmes ‘sorry’ for replacing Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning

Eamonn Holmes jokingly admitted that he’s ‘sorry’ to have replaced Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning during the summer holidays – but Ruth Langsford couldn’t disagree with his sentiment more.

Having previously hosted the Friday edition of This Morning before the slot was taken over by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, Eamonn and Ruth now present the ITV programme whenever school holidays are taking place.

On Thursday’s show, the couple and Vanessa Feltz welcomed callers who wished to make amends, in light of the apology former professional footballer Wayne Rooney recently apologised to his family and Derby County after pictures emerged of him with women in a nightclub and a hotel room.

Having listened to several callers, including a woman who wished to say sorry to an old classmate who she used to bully in school and a man who offered a profuse apology to his partner for previously cheating on him, Eamonn had his own apology to share.

‘Sorry to everybody. Sorry that we’re here this summer and Phillip and Holly aren’t,’ the 61-year-old said.

‘But you’ve just got us, that’s what you’ve got to put up with,’ he added.

Ruth, 61, immediately opposed Eamonn’s message, telling her husband to ‘stop it’ before stating: ‘I’m not saying sorry for that, I’m thoroughly enjoying being here.’

Earlier on Thursday’s edition of the show, Eamonn and Ruth welcomed nine-year-old Sophie Fairall onto the programme, who has terminal cancer and had a wish to appear on the ITV series.

Holly, Sophie’s favourite This Morning presenter, made a surprise appearance via video chat, telling the young girl that she was sending her a ‘virtual hug’.

Holly also gifted Sophie with the tiara that she wore for the This Morning Christmas pantomime show, in addition to the water bottle she used during her time in Australia for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, which was thoroughly cleaned.

Several This Morning viewers praised Sophie’s bravery, with a viewer describing her as a ‘legend’.

‘Sophie is a very special young lady her personality, attitude, positivity she is so brave. Thank you #thismorning for making one of her wishes come true,’ one person said.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
