The Ellen DeGeneres Show will no doubt be remembered for its entertainment value but also, for having some of the most cringe-worthy and awkward moments on daytime TV.
Ellen, 63, has confirmed that her popular chat show will end in 2022 after a staggering 19 years on air.
It comes after a challenging past year which saw staff members on the show accused of workplace bullying and reports of ‘appalling’ ratings.
However, perhaps the writing was always on the wall for the end of Ellen after attention recently turned to resurfaced interviews featuring uncomfortable exchanges between the host and her A-list guests.
Ellen was long applauded for her seemingly effortless ability to make her guests feel at ease but that hasn’t always been the case.
As The Ellen DeGeneres Show prepares for its final season, here’s a look back at the times when audiences were cringing more than laughing.
In 2008, Mariah appeared on the programme amid speculation she was expecting a baby with then-husband Nick Cannon.
During the interview, Mariah stated that she ‘didn’t want to discuss’ the rumours but Ellen then presented her with champagne so they could ‘toast’ to her not being pregnant.
When Ellen noticed that the Grammy-winning singer only pretended to sip the alcohol, she exclaimed: ‘You are pregnant!’
Mariah was indeed expecting a baby but she sadly miscarried shortly after.
Reflecting on the interview recently, Mariah told Vulture: ‘I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath.
‘I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage.’
Mariah then referred to the scrutiny currently surrounding Ellen and stated: ‘I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.’
‘[There’s] an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do? It’s like, [sings] “What are you going to do?”’
Just moments after Dakota sat on Ellen’s couch in November 2018, they suffered one of the most awkward exchanges.
Ellen asked the Fifty Shades of Grey actress why she hadn’t been invited to her 30th birthday only, Dakota revealed she was.
‘How was the party? I wasn’t invited,’ Ellen joked, to which Dakota shot back: ‘Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen.’
The actress was visibly annoyed and went on: ‘Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of s**t about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.’
‘Well, who wouldn’t want to be invited to a party?’ Ellen wondered, to which Dakota revealed: ‘Well, I didn’t even know you liked me.’
Even Ellen’s producer dobbed her out and said the TV host was indeed invited to the party. It was only then that Ellen remembered receiving the invite before quickly brushing off the whole situation, stating she ‘had a thing’.
In 2012, Taylor was quizzed on her dating life and rumours that she was romantically involved with Zac Efron.
After denying they had ever dated, Ellen repeatedly pressed her on it before presenting Taylor with a slideshow of men she was reported to have dated and given a bell to ring when the correct guy came up on-screen.
However, Taylor was clearly uncomfortable and repeatedly said: ‘You know I can’t talk about this. I don’t want to.’
Ellen proceeded to press Ariana on her love life in 2016 when she was dating Mac Miller.
‘Let’s talk about your love life, can we?’ Ellen said.
Ariana literally squirmed in her seat and replied: ‘Oh my God, oh God, I don’t know, man. This is so crazy.
‘I’ve never had the relationship talk on a show before. No pressure.’
However after being pressured further, Ariana eventually did confirm she was dating Mac before retreating into the couch.
In this throwback to 2006, Ellen criticised Celine’s son’s long hair on national TV.
‘It seems like you’re too busy because you’re forgetting to cut your son’s hair,’ Ellen told the singer.
‘Look at him. He is beautiful but look at his hair. When are you going to cut that hair?’ she added.
Celine fired back: ‘Do you have a problem with that?’
Ellen insisted: ‘No I don’t have a problem, that is some long hair.’
The singer then explained: ‘Some people shave the head of their children, and people say, “Oh, isn’t that terrible?” Well, I don’t even cut my son’s hair and they say, “Oh my god, when is she going to cut her son’s hair?” You know? Whatever I will do, I won’t please everyone.’
‘When he’s ready I’ll cut it,’ she stated.
