Emily Atack has addressed her lads’ mags past, saying she has her FHM plaques on her wall.
The actress was a favourite of magazines like FHM and Loaded after she starred on The Inbetweeners as school bombshell Charlotte ‘Big Jugs’ Hinchcliffe, and appeared on the cover of many of the magazines over the years.
Now 31, the star is glad that her stint in the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! jungle got to show people another side to her, but she is still proud of her modelling.
Speaking on the Jonathan Ross Christmas special, Emily said: ‘The wonderful thing about the jungle [I’m A Celebrity] was it gave me this whole new lease of life in my career.
‘For years I was known as Charlotte Big Jugs from The Inbetweeners. That was fine and that was fun. But I got to a point where things start drooping down a bit.
‘I needed a new medium to say the things I wanted to say. I thought by doing the jungle it would show a little bit more who I am as a person. It’s very easy to be categorised when you do lads’ mags and all that kind of stuff…
‘I thought for years people have been talking about my body, my sexuality, what I look like.
‘My career became very much about what I looked like, so I thought, what better way – when the jungle came knocking – to show what I have as a person and what more I have to offer.’
Emily joined the jungle in 2018, and came second on the show to king of the jungle Harry Redknapp.
Since then, she has landed her own show on ITV2 and is a celebrity captain on Celebrity Juice, and Emily credits being able to show off the real her on the jungle for the career turnaround.
She said: ‘I’ve got the FHM plaques on my wall and I’m very proud of them. But I just got to a point where I needed a new medium to say the things I wanted to say.
‘I wasn’t the goddess in the shower in the bikini, I was the freckled faced idiot running around with no care in the world.’
Emily added to Jonathan that she was the happiest and strongest she’s ever felt in the jungle, with stars including John Barrowman and Fleur East.
After a number of small TV roles, Emily’s breakout came in the hit comedy The Inbetweeners, in which she starred as the beautiful and popular Charlotte, the target of Will McKenzie’s (Simon Bird) affections.
While the role opened up her career, Emily admitted that her bombshell alter ego led to embarrassing situations on dates.
Speaking to the Mirror, the comedian said: ‘I’ve been called Charlotte by three different dates. I’ve always forgiven it because they genuinely haven’t meant to do it, and I can see the absolute look of horror on their faces when they realise.
‘I’ve laughed it off, although once I was sleeping with someone when they said it and it was like, “oh for f***s sake”. I still carried on though.’
The Jonathan Ross Christmas Show is on at 10pm on ITV on Christmas Eve.
