Euphoria season 2: Eric Dane reveals how he heard Cal’s ‘backstory’ twist from Zendaya

Euphoria star Eric Dane revealed he didn’t know fans were going to be given a further insight into Cal’s backstory until he heard Zendaya’s opening monologue.

*Warning spoilers ahead for season two episode three of Euphoria*

The third chapter, titled Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys, started with Rue Bennett detailing how Cal ‘spent everyday with his best friend Derek.’

To celebrate their graduation, they head out and order a lot of drinks, seemingly unaware that they were in a gay bar. As the night progresses they dance and ended up kissing, which resulted in adult Cal struggling to embrace his sexuality.

The Grey’s Anatomy star, 49, was a little surprised when he found out Cal’s childhood story would play out in the second season.

‘I figured we would eventually get to it because that’s what we do with all the characters,’ he told Entertainment Weekly.

‘I found out that we were getting into Cal’s backstory at the table read when [Zendaya]’s VO says “When Cal was young …” And so I was like, “oh, I guess we’re getting into Cal now.”‘

In season one, Cal was introduced as Nate’s (Jacob Elordi) no-nonsense father with a secret life where he frequent hook-ups in motels with young men and trans women.

While Eric’s character isn’t a firm favourite with fans for obvious reasons, viewers couldn’t help but marvel at teen Cal and Derek’s undeniable chemistry, and some were even pleading with HBO bosses to create a spin-off featuring the pair.

One person wrote: ‘I want a younger Cal and Derek spin-off.’

While another added: ‘I hate Cal but i was invested in young Cal and Derek’s story…also Cal in high school wasn’t as bad as Nate in high school…curious what happened after that.’

When asked if we’ll see Derek as an adult in later episodes, Eric said: ‘Oh my God. I never thought of that. That would be interesting. The grown version of Derek would have to be like, can we get Brad Pitt to do this?

‘Let’s throw an offer out there and see if he bites.’

Episode three also saw Rue confronting Gia after discovering she was using drugs again.

Elsewhere Nate and Maddy attempted to rekindle their relationship, however Maddy remains oblivious over the fact that Nate has been sleeping with her BFF Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney).

Euphoria airs Sundays on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV
