The Eurovision Song Contest returns on May 14, with TikTok star Sam Ryder hoping to redeem the UK from last year’s disaster when James Newman became the only act of the night to not pick up a single point.
Sam is tipper to do much better, being hailed as our best entry for years, but at least one triumph is certain as AJ makes her Eurovision debut and will no doubt smash her two minute contribution to the night.
A tweet from the official Eurovision Song Contest account confirmed: ‘Ciao Italia, this is SALFORD calling!
‘AJ Odudu will be the first Eurovision spokesperson to present the UK jury’s douze points from the North West.’
Naturally, fans called the signing a ‘terrific’ choice and said they were ‘thrilled’, which comes after Amanda Holden managed to spark backlash when she was given the same honour last year.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge began her segment by attempting speak in both French and Dutch by saying: ‘Bon soir. Goedenavond.’
Then she immediately admitted: ‘That is good evening in French and Dutch although I’ve got absolutely no idea which is which.’
People actually went on to blame her for ruining our chances, despite the votes already being counted.
So no pressure, AJ!
Ahead of the contest next month, Sam, who boasts more than 12 million TikTik followers enthused: ‘Having been a fan of Eurovision since I was a kid l I am so honoured to have been presented with the opportunity to sing at an event alongside some of Europe’s most talented creatives, performers and songwriters.
‘I hope to sing my head off in a way the UK can be proud of, and to showcase a song I wrote with my friends last summer makes the whole experience even more special. See you in Turin legends!’
The Eurovision Song Contest airs on May 14 on BBC One.
