One of the fantasy hits of the 80s is heading for a new TV adaptation, with Willow the latest movie to get the reboot treatment at Disney Plus.
It was announced back in October that the fantasy epic will get a new lease of life on the streaming platform, marking Lucasfilm’s first non-Star Wars project in five years.
The original movie told the story of Warwick Davis’s Willow Ufgood, a Nelwyn dwarf who is forced into protecting an infant named Elora Danan from an evil queen (Jean Marsh).
The film saw Willow protected by a swordsman played by Val Kilmer, while Joanne Whalley, Billy Barty and Kevin Pollak also starred in the film.
Despite an indifferent start to life at the box office, it eventually proved one of the most popular fantasy moments of the 80s, developing a cult following in the years that followed.
Here’s everything we know about the upcoming Willow TV series, from release date, to cast and plot.
Who is starring in the Willow TV series?
There couldn’t be a series without him, and the big news is that Warwick Davis is set to return to the lead role as Willow Ufgood.
There could be another major name from the film returning too. Warwick recently revealed to Metro.co.uk that he ‘sincerely hopes’ Val Kilmer will be back too.
Meanwhile, the first bit of new casting has already been confirmed.
Erin Kellyman, Cailee Spaeny, and Ellie Bamber are negotiating to star in the Disney Plus series, according to Variety.
British actress Erin is known for her performance as the leader of the rebel Cloud Riders Enfys Nest in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Callie and Ellie, meanwhile, have starred as Jane Ginsburg in On The Basis of Sex and Cosette in Les Miserables respectively.
Further details of the trio’s roles have yet to be confirmed.
Jon M. Chu will direct the pilot and executive produce. Ron Howard, who directed the original film, will return to executive produce the series.
What is the Willow TV series about?
While the details of the plot remain under wraps, we do know that the series won’t be a straight up remake of the film.
Instead of replicating the original story, the series will move the action thirty years after the events of the film, introducing new characters into the world first created in the 1988 film.
When is the Willow TV series being released on Disney Plus?
The series is exciting news for fans of the original film, although they will have to wait a little while before they get to see the show.
Disney announced in October 2020 that the Willow series would be arriving on its streaming platform in 2022.
‘Willow, an Original Series from Lucasfilm starring Warwick Davis, with pilot directed by @JonMChu, is coming in 2022,’ Disney’s Tweet stated.
It was the last announcement to be made in the rush of Disney projects confirmed in October, which also included the likes of Star Wars Acolyte a new Indiana Jones film with Harrison Ford.
