Ewan McGregor’s daughter has shared a story that would undoubtedly be many people’s worst nightmare: having to witness her father perform naked scenes on film.
Throughout his career, Ewan has established himself as one of the world’s most recognisable performers, appearing in films such as Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge!, and the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
The 52-year-old is currently appearing in the film Bleeding Love with his real-life daughter Clara McGregor, 28, whom he has with ex-wife Eve Mavrakis.
The father-daughter team recently went on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss what it was like to work together, which brought up the unpleasant issue of Clara seeing a film in which her father featured.
When asked if she had seen many of her dad’s movies, she answered: ‘I saw a lot of them. There was one that was quite memorable, watching this one was quite memorable in particular, because when I was a senior in high school I took a gender studies class.’
Straight away, Ewan placed his head in his hands, grimacing with embarrassment as his daughter continued.
‘My teacher came up to me near the end of the semester and said: ‘Listen, there’s a movie that I usually teach as part of the curriculum. Your dad is in it and there is some nudity, so I wanted to run it by you before we watched it in class.”
‘I said it was fine, I didn’t really think much of it, and so we watched a movie called The Pillow Book, which is a brilliant film. But watching that movie at 17 with your entire high school class, it’s more like they’re watching me watch that film.’
As the studio crowd chuckled, Jimmy, 56, questioned Ewan whether he had been naked for most of the film.
‘A lot,’ he confirmed, as Clara piped up to add: ‘Full-frontally nude, the whole time!’
Ewan said that Clara’s teacher had also written him to see whether he was okay with showing The Pillow Book to her and her class.
‘The teacher, she emailed me before as well to say, “Just so you know, I’m thinking to show this for your daughter’s class, is that ok?” I went, “I wouldn’t want to be the reason you don’t show that movie to your kids, because it’s a beautiful movie,”’ he recollected.
‘But I said, “You have to guarantee that the kids are mature enough not to make fun of Clara or make her feel bad.’
Clara acknowledged that her class were mature enough, before adding: ‘It was uncomfortable. I think they also probably felt a little uncomfortable about it.’
To make an awkward situation even more cringeworthy, Jimmy then crudely joked: ‘Yeah, they’re like, “Oh there’s where she came from.”
‘Come on, Jimmy!’ Ewan exclaimed.
A lot of Ewan’s family members work in the entertainment industry, and the actor married his Fargo co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who later appeared in the Star Wars series Ahsoka, in 2022.
His daughter Esther co-starred with him in the television series Obi-Wan Kenobi, and his uncle Denis Lawson played Wedge Antilles in the original Star Wars trilogy.Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on ABC in the US.
