Extra Slice host Jo Brand taunts Channel 4 over technical difficulties after Ofcom considers action

Extra Slice host Jo Brand cheerfully taunted Channel 4 over its recent spate of technical difficulties while hosting The Great British Bake Off spin-off.

Since last month, Channel 4 has been grappling with technical issues with audio problems resulting in viewers with hearing and visual impairments struggling to enjoy shows on the channel.

This week, Ofcom announced that it was considering taking action over Channel 4’s subtitle failures and that it was ‘deeply concerned’, after Channel 4 confirmed that subtitles were returning to shows including Bake Off and Gogglebox.

While the issues are a significant concern that have affected numerous people, on the latest episode of Extra Slice, Jo made light of the situation by making a joke about Prue Leith’s outfit on Pastry Week of Bake Off.

For the most recent episode of the beloved baking competition, Prue donned a multicoloured jacket that some fans compared to Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat.

However, to Jo, the garment reminded her of the brightly-coloured bars that often appear on TVs when something’s not working.

‘On a grey day weather-wise, Prue really wanted to brighten things up in the tent,’ Jo said during her opening monologue.

‘Her jacket was inspired by those colour bars you see when there’s a technical problem with your telly. No offence Channel 4.’

This week, Amanda became the latest baker to leave the tent, after a disaster during her showstopper saw her terrine pie break in half.

Despite Chigs’ best efforts to help Amanda salvage her bake, not much could be done to save it before she had to present it to the judges Paul Hollywood and Prue.

Presenters Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas were extremely concerned while watching Amanda and Chigs try to repair the pie, with Noel admitting he was struggling to watch.

Giuseppe’s face was also a picture, as he appeared unable to tear his eyes away.

In her leaving letter, Amanda described being a part of Bake Off as ‘an incredible experience’, writing: ‘I developed such a tight bond with the other bakers, they feel like family.

‘I have made friends with the most wonderful people, both the bakers and crew that I am sure will last a lifetime.’

Extra Slice returns next Friday at 8pm on Channel 4.
