Warning: This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Curb Your Enthusiasm concluded Sunday night after 12 seasons spanning 25 years, with fans applauding the ending of the Larry David-led comedy programme, which finished with a dramatic shock.
The series, which centres on a fictitious, grumpy version of Larry, 76, ended on a surprising positive note when he escaped incarceration in the last seconds.
The episode centred on Larry’s prosecution for breaching Georgia election law by handing Auntie Rae Black (Ellia English) a glass of water while she waited in queue to vote.
Larry’s multiple offences were recounted and shown to a jury during his trial, including murdering a swan with a golf club, eating a dying dog’s final meal, and paying a prostitute to utilise a carpool lane, among many other disgusting behaviours.
After a year in prison, Larry was unexpectedly released by Jerry Seinfeld.
Many viewers were quick to note the resemblance to the disputed 1998 conclusion of Seinfeld, a programme Larry co-created, which saw the four pals imprisoned for a year.
Naturally, fans were thrilled with the tribute, calling the move ‘cocky and fantastic’.
@mike_snoonian said on X: ‘Larry David repeating the Seinfeld finale to a ‘T’ after two decades plus of hearing people b*tch and moan about it is the most baller, cocky, and fantastic move he could have made. What a high note to go out on. RIP #CurbYourEnthusiasm.’
@chuckthomasuk added: ‘That was the best finale ever. Larry recreates the Seinfeld finale, only to surprise us with a last-minute twist from Jerry. Still the funniest show on TV after 25 years. Pretty, pretty good. #CurbYourEnthusiasm.’
While some were pleased with how the writers decided to bring Curb to a close, claiming it was a perfect ‘heartfelt send-off’, others were left ‘so sad it’s really over’ and wanting more from the writers.
@Stank3025 said on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘Sad to see my favorite show ever come to an end. The finale was great. Funniest sitcom of all time. #CurbYourEnthusiasm.’
@theLady_Blu said: ‘I laughed just as hard as I always did. Now I’m so sad it’s really over you guys were amazing! I looked forward to this show for years to help me get the BS that’s life. Thank you all, I’ll miss you #CurbYourEnthusiasm.’
@MWestonKing commented:‘A sad day for all us Curb enthusiasts. But all great things must end and this has been one of the greatest. Thank you Larry for brightening up an, at times very dark world. #CurbYourEnthusiasm #LarryDavid.’
Larry explained why the beloved series has ended, saying that he is just ‘too elderly’ to keep up with the show’s demands.
‘I’m too old to really be on camera every single week now,’ he told Sunday Today per USA Today.
‘To act the way I do on this show, how can I continue to act like that? It’s insane. Yeah, I can do it in my 50s and 60s to mid-70s. I’m not going into the 80s acting like that!’
He added that there was ‘no chance’ of the series ever returning, despite the fact that fans are reluctant to believe him.
‘Nobody believes me,’ Larry told the Today show. ‘I don’t understand it. People don’t believe me. This is it!’
