Joe Exotic’s attorney is worried for his life and claims that the Tiger King star is being denied treatment for his blood-immune disorder in prison.
The former zookeeper is currently serving a 22-year sentence for animal abuse and a murder for hire plot at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Texas and is said to have developed sores ‘all over his mouth’ as a result of having medicine withheld.
Francisco Hernandez, who has been working on Exotic’s case for the past year, exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘I’m worried about him. With a blood immune disorder, if he gets Covid right now it could very well be the death of him. Covid is still going through the prison system and he’s not out of the woods, it could kill him.’
Hernandez revealed that Exotic’s health has spiralled over the past few weeks and he’s lost a lot of weight.
‘I talked to him yesterday and I could barely understand him because of all the sores in his mouth,’ he shared.
‘He’s supposed to be getting a blood infusion at least every four weeks for his condition, it’s a blood disorder and he hasn’t had one since November.
‘He has sores all over his mouth and everything hurts. He loses a lot of weight, so health-wise he is not doing well.’
Hernandez added that Exotic is ‘stressed’ by the situation but is aware there have also been ‘thousands of prisoners going through the same thing and not getting adequate medical care in a medical facility’.
Exotic’s team are desperately trying to help his case.
‘We’re trying, but it’s prison and people don’t care about what happens to people in prison,’ he said.
‘FMC is a medical facility so if there’s anywhere he ought to get proper medical care, it’s there.’
Exotic was denied a pardon by Donald Trump in January, but his team are continuing to fight his case. At present, they are appealing his sentence.
Tiger King is available to stream on Netflix.
