First Dates Manchester singletons allowed to kiss and hold hands despite coronavirus

First Dates Manchester singletons were able to kiss and hold hands on their dates – despite the threat of coronavirus – thanks to strict safety measures taken by Channel 4 during filming.

Parts of the brand new series, which launches on Tuesday, were recorded while the nation was in lockdown and stringent precautions were taken to make sure contributors could enjoy a somewhat ‘normal’ first date.

‘At the time of filming, production followed Government protocol and put robust procedures in place to ensure the safety of all daters and staff,’ a spokesperson told

‘Measures included rigorous testing, self-isolation and a bubble system, whilst filming took place in a restaurant closed to the public.

‘These strict measures meant daters featured in the show were safe to enjoy a First Dates experience as close to normal as possible, including, at their own discretion, whether they held hands or kissed.’

New staff member David explained that no members of the public were allowed in to dine at the restaurant, The Refinery in Spinningfields, while filming took place.

‘When we’re filming, we are a closed set, which means we’re not open to the general public during filming,’ he told us.

‘We followed strict protocols in order to give some semblance of normality and make it safe for us to film. We were able to carry on as “normal” with the strict procedures in place.’

Fellow newcomer Fiona added: ‘No one was allowed in the restaurant if they didn’t have a negative result.’

First Dates Manchester begins Tuesday at 10pm on Channel 4.
