The first photograph of John Cleese anchoring a new show for GB News has been released.
The 83-year-old will provide a “no-holds-barred account” of the news in the forthcoming series of episodes, which will premiere in September.
It’s described as “unpredictable, engaging, informative, and entertaining.” Is anyone else concerned about what this means?
They also stated that the’signature dry wit and tongue-in-cheek demeanour’ of the Fawlty Towers actor will be utilised throughout.
‘Cleese’s programme promises to be like none other seen on-screen before,’ the news channel threatened.
The actor can be seen in the first look image in a rural location, seated at a table appearing calm and conversing to another man – maybe an interviewee – while drinking a drink.
Behind John is a life-sized bear, which may indicate nothing or could be a coded message suggesting the show is something to be dreaded (perhaps we’re overthinking things).
The singer has hinted that his work would be directed at an odd demographic.
He said: ‘Hello, I used to be John Cleese and I’m gonna be doing some shows for GB News.
‘For two reasons; one, they asked me to; and two, they want programming for viewers who are completely out of touch, a much-neglected demographic.
‘So stay out of touch with me.’
‘You should be prepared to be shocked,’ the Monty Python star added, having previously claimed last year that when he was on the BBC, he ‘wouldn’t get five minutes into the first show before I’d be cancelled or censored’.
According to GB News executive producer Andrew Doyle, John enjoys ‘total creative control’ over his show.
The station already features hosts Dan Wooton, Nigel Farage, and Laurence Fox, all of whom may be deemed controversial by some.
Earlier this month, Ofcom issued four additional probes against a variety of programmes to GB News.
This includes shows under investigation for violating regulations requiring “due impartiality on matters of major political or industrial controversy, or those relating to current public policy.”
The watchdog, which has already begun an inquiry against GB News, stated that they will “work to conclude our investigations as soon as possible” in accordance with their protocols.
During a live appearance on Australian television, John questioned host Waleed Aly if his name was an anagram, causing controversy.
At the end of the interview, John said: ‘What kind of name is Waleed, anyway? Is it an anagram?’
‘No. It’s just Arabic. I take it your Arabic’s not great,’ the presenter quipped back at the insult.
