The first official picture of the Powerpuff Girls live-action reboot has landed, and luckily for fans, those ‘low-budget’ costumes are nowhere to be seen.

Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault are set to play Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup Utonium as the crime-fighting gang, but fans weren’t best pleased after seeing the actresses on set in their signature colour dresses and black belts last week.

It was argued that the looks, which resembled those the Powerpuff Girls wore in the cartoon, looked low-budget, but the first look at CW’s Powerpuff shows that the girls won’t be in those costumes as adults.

The promo picture sees Bubbles wearing a blue vest top, Blossom in a pink blazer and Buttercup in a green leather jacket, with the dresses seen on set apparently only seen in flashbacks for the girls’ teenage years.

Powerpuff picks up years after where the cartoon left off, with Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup now disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent losing their childhood to crime-fighting.

The CW also dropped details about each of the characters, saying: ‘Though she was a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, Blossom’s repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again — this time on her own terms.

‘Bubbles’ sweet-girl disposition won America’s hearts as a child. She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself.

‘Buttercup was the rebellious badass of The Powerpuff Girls in its heyday. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.’

The show asks: ‘Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?’

The show also stars Scrubs actor Donald Faison as the girls’ father Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany is Jojo Mondel, the son of Mojo Jojo, and Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum.

Chloe Bennet already has some experience in the world of superheroes, playing Daisy Johnson in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., while Dove Cameron is best known for playing Mal in the Descendants series.

Meanwhile, Powerpuff marks the TV debut for Yana Perrault, who starred as Swing in the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill on Broadway.

Juno’s Diablo Cody will write and executive produce along with Heather Regnier, while the pilot will be directed by Maggie Kiley.

The original Powerpuff Girls ran for Cartoon Network for six seasons between 1998 until 2005 and spawned a 2002 film, as well as a reboot in 2016 which ended after three seasons.

The show has yet to get a release date.
