From The Problem With John Stewart to The Great North – What to watch this week

Need a TV show to take your mind off what’s going on in the world?

This week’s watch list can certainly help with that.

There’s gripping drama in the form of legal thriller Goliath, while dark Danish crime drama The Chestnut Man will keep you glued to the screen.

Or something more lighthearted, there is down-to-earth comedy from Daily Show legend Jon Stewart, and a new Bob’s Burgers-esque cartoon.

Billy Bob Thornton plays a lawyer fighting the good fight (Picture: Greg Lewis/Amazon)

Billy Bob Thornton returns for a fourth and final season of an edgy legal drama that’s undeservedly flown under the radar.

For a finale that cuts to the heart of a disturbing issue, Thornton’s pugnacious lawyer Billy McBride is fighting the good fight against a million-dollar family empire, piling the cash high by keeping millions of Americans hooked on opioids.

But Billy’s got a mountain to climb – in the opposing corner the opioid clan have lined up acting heavyweights JK Simmons, Bruce Dern and Haley Joel Osment.

The Daily Show funnyman returns to our screens (Picture: Alberto Reyes/Apple TV)

If anyone can fix the world’s problems then maybe it’s Jon Stewart, the Daily Show legend who returns after a long absence from TV with a show that sets out to do just that.

Or give them a good airing, at least. Each week Stewart and guests tackle a hot topic – inequality, the environment, the usual chit-chat kind of stuff – and try to figure out ways of moving forward.

If you’re looking for an amusing voice of sanity to help you through modern madness, Stewart’s your guy.

Gritty Danish drama follows some disturbing goings on in the woods (Picture: Tine Harden/Netflix)

Which nuts do you find most creepy (steady)? A weird walnut, perhaps? A macabre macadamia?

In Denmark the nasty nut title clearly belongs to the chestnut, as this forest-based serial killer thriller conjures up tiny little twig models made from the little fellers, which on the surface look cute – but they’re the only clue as to who is doing dark things down in the woods.

Danica Curcic stars as the detective tasked with cracking the case.

Available from Friday.

Nick Offerman provides the voice for single dad Beef Tobin (Picture: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Fox Media LLC/Disney)

From the same animated family as Bob’s Burgers and Central Park comes this latest challenger to Family Guy in the eccentric American family stakes.

The adventures of single dad Beef Tobin (voiced by Nick Offerman of Parks And Recreation fame) and his offspring as they attempt to forge a new life in the wilds of Alaska are rather less snarky than the Quahog crew but there’s a sharp sense of humour cracking through the ice.
