Futurama fans outraged new series may recast Bender as John DiMaggio yet to sign on to new Hulu series

Futurama is being revived for brand new episodes a decade after the show came to an end.

Creators Matt Groening and David X Cohen are back at the helm, Hulu has commissioned a full season of 20 episodes, and the voices of almost every main character have already signed on to return.

As one of the greatest animated sitcoms of the 31st century, Futurama is a solid cult classic, and the news of its revival was a cause for celebration.

For about five minutes, at least.

There is already controversy brewing around the project, as voice actor John DiMaggio – aka foul-mouthed robot Bender – is the only main character not yet signed on to return.

While Futurama boasts a full cast of zany, memorable characters, Bender is the most iconic by far, and many see John’s voice as completely irreplaceable.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Hulu and John are both eager to make an agreement for the voice actor to return to the show and are currently working to finalise a deal.

But for now the character is in limbo, and there’s a chance Bender could be recast.

Fans have taken to Twitter voicing their fury that the show could potentially recast the voice of Bender, some suggesting the project shouldn’t even go ahead if that happened.

And to spice things up, John has been retweeting these complaints to his own account – so it’s unclear just how well those negotiations with Hulu are going.

‘Bringing Futurama back and recasting Bender is, to put it politely, really f***ing stupid,’ one exasperated fan said.

‘Bender is [John DiMaggio], [John DiMaggio] is Bender. Period,’ another wrote.

One person wrote to Hulu directly on Twitter and said the series revival ‘is not worth it’ if John isn’t involved, while another message retweeted by John urged Hulu to ‘pay the man!’

Another advised the streaming site that if they can’t get John on the project, ‘just pull the plug’, adding ‘Futurama without Bender is like Golden Age simpsons without homer (sic)’.

Taking to Twitter after sharing others’ complaints and plans to boycott, John himself wrote: ‘Thanks for the concern and the props, everyone. I really appreciate it.

‘Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted, but until then… CHEESE IT!’

As well as Bender, John is the voice of Adventure Time’s Jake The Dog, Zog in Disenchantment, multiple smaller characters in Futurama and more.

The cult sci-fi sitcom from The Simpsons’ creator Matt first aired in 1999, but despite its popularity was canceled twice, first by Fox and then by Comedy Central.

Altogether, Futurama boasted four seasons, four straight-to-DVD movies and a further two seasons before being permanently cancelled in 2013.

Creators Matt and David spoke of their joy of the project being picked up again in a statement seen by Variety.

David said he was ‘ thrilled to have another chance to think about the future… or really anything other than the present’.

Matt, meanwhile, joked it was ‘a true honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama one more time before we get canceled abruptly again.’
