Creator Ruth Jones said that fans of Gavin and Stacey will have to say goodbye to the programme for good this time.
James Corden also wrote for the series, which ended in 2010 before making a one-time return in 2019 for a Christmas special.
Right before the credits rolled, Nessa (Ruth) unexpectedly proposed to Smithy (James), setting off the ultimate cliffhanger for the joyous episode.
It seemed only natural that the special would reappear someday, as it had left us with more questions than answers.
Gavin and Stacey put their fans’ minds at ease by confirming that they will return to Barry Island and Billericay for another Christmas Day extravaganza, answering years of questions about whether there would be more.
Ruth,57, promises that this will be the last time we hear Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) avoid talking about the fishing trip or Mick and Pam Shipman (Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman) argue over everything, so everyone better make sure they savour every moment.
‘I’m so thrilled by how much people love it. It’s a huge huge compliment,’ Ruth said on BBC Woman’s Hour before delivering the bad news.
‘It will be the end,’ she stated.
Ruth is unsure whether she will ever stop being asked about it, even after giving a firm response.
‘Will people still say to me: “Is there going to be any more Gavin and Stacey?” I don’t know because they’ve been asking that question for years and I’ve said “No” because until you know for definite that it can happen, you can’t say anything.’
The actress went on to say that she was disappointed that there had been a leak of the information prior to an official release.
‘It was unfortunate as James and I wanted to give everybody a nice surprise and I think that it was really mean that they leaked it because it also meant that I had to lie to people, to friends and family, because they were all saying “is it happening?”
She added: ‘The reality is that until you have your cast booked, budget worked out, all of those things, you cannot say categorically that it is going to happen.’
James, 45, verified the exciting news that the finale was taking place on May 3 via an Instagram post.
Holding the script, the former host of Late Late Show took a selfie with Ruth.
‘Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James ❤️,’ the accompanying caption read.
Few specifics have been revealed since the first post, however there are rumours that Sheridan Smith may be resuming her role as Rudi, Smithy’s sister, and pulling out her wheelies. She would be joining Joanna Page and Matthew Horne, who portray the programme is title characters, as well as the family members who have grown to love them.
Neil the baby actor Oscar Hartland has previously shared with Metro.co.uk, the direction he’d like his character to go down.
‘Neil should have a dark turn. He has always been very likeable, so that would be fun,’ he remarked.
