It’s fair to say that one of the most uncomfortable situations in existence is watching a sex scene with your parents, and while Gillian Anderson is proud to be part of the ground-breaking series Sex Education, it doesn’t mean she wants her teenage sons seeing it.

The Emmy-award winning actress, 53, says she has told her children not to watch the Netflix comedy and she believes they haven’t. Well, she hopes not.

Speaking to The Radio Times Podcast, she said: ‘I have to say, I am living happily in the denial that my children do not watch the show.

‘I hope they haven’t.’

‘When it first came out, I told them they weren’t allowed to,’ she continued. ‘I have no control over what they do at their friends.’

She went on to admit that the show does an incredible job in dealing with serious issues such as consent, abortion and female solidarity.

The star, who plays sex therapist Dr. Jean Milburn, said: ‘I have had the conversations with them about certain aspects of the show, and the importance of certain aspects of the show.

‘Conversations that are had that aren’t usually had on television that are very important, if not vital, for young people to hear.’

The third season of the teen drama was well received by critics and fans alike, especially for shining a light on the non-binary experience and rejection of the male gaze.

Gillian has had a very successful few days as, just after the release the critically acclaimed season three, she took home an Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series for her portrayal as prime minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown.

And what better way to celebrate a win than with a massive phallic cake, if you peek through Gillian’s Instagram, you’ll see the star regular uploads images of a sexual nature, so need to be surprised.

Sex Education is available to stream on Netflix.
