Ranvir Singh has taken to Twitter to apologise after claiming the Queen ‘doesn’t do very much’ on Good Morning Britain on Thursday.
The GMB host, 43, had revealed during conversation that she has links to the University of Central Lancashire, which prompted questions from co-host Sean Fletcher, 47.
He responded: ‘You snuck in there that you’re a chancellor with a university, that’s pretty impressive.’
Ranvir then replied: ‘Yes well, that’s another thing. It’s like being the Queen, you don’t do very much, but you go around shaking hands. Sorry to the Queen – you work very hard.’
The off-hand comment didn’t go down well with viewers, who tweeted: ‘Am shocked and disgusted that you just said the Queen doesn’t do much but shake hands-you should be ashamed of yourself! Vile and disgusting words.’
Others added: ‘I hope I’m able to work as hard as the queen when I’m 95’ and ‘as if you’ve just said the Queen doesn’t do a lot other than shake peoples hands.’
She wrote: ‘Agree you’re right – I actually meant it’s a ceremonial [role] without any real power but fumbled it. #livetv’.
Fans responded to her tweet, adding: ‘Nothing ceremonial in attending about 300 engagements every year, travelling all over the UK and going through and signing government dispatches EVERY DAY, even during her summer retreat at Balmoral! No rest on holiday, no retiring at 65!’
Others wrote: ‘It was the quick “oops, that came out wrong” moment that was funny’ and ‘I knew exactly what you meant Ranvir, and yes, you are right. Loving your dress this morning, I hope that you get to keep it x.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
