Gogglebox: Gyles Brandreth reveals the deceptively simple way the show helps guests relax

Gogglebox alum Gyles Brandreth has revealed the deceptively simple way the show relaxes its guests and helps them forget the cameras are rolling – and honestly, we’d love the same kind of treatment.

The humourist and former Conservative MP has appeared on the show’s Stand Up To Cancer celebrity specials in the past alongside Dame Maureen Lipman and Dame Sheila Hancock, and both times the producers have employed the same cunning trick.

How do they get stars to open up? By buying them luxurious takeaways.

Gyles told Esther Rantzen on her That’s After Life podcast that the producers of the Channel 4 programme send a Deliveroo order when they’re due to film – helping them to feel as comfortable as possible.

Where do we sign up?

Speaking about how the show works behind the scenes, Gyles said: ‘They come to your house at the beginning and they set up the camera in the room and then go away for two months. The cameras are permanently in the room and you genuinely forget they are there, they’re small discreet cameras.

‘Then as set times you go in and you press the button and they don’t give you a choice over the programmes, you watch the ones they select for you, but you’re alone in the building and that lulls you into that false state of relaxation.’

Speaking about being sent delicious treats, Gyles added: ‘They sent round Deliveroo with different treats: fish and chips, indeed the chocolate eclairs, the crisps and all of that.

‘So these little sweetmeats arrive and they like you to be seen bringing it in and you can hear that little chit-chat and then you have the snacks together. It’s great fun.’

Gyles most recently appeared on the celebrity edition of the show in 2020, and it sounds like he didn’t go hungry.

Meanwhile, the Gogglebox cast have just as addicted to Line of Duty as the rest of the country over recent weeks.

The stars of the Channel 4 show were absolutely beside themselves with frustration as they watched episode four of Line of Duty series six unfold, screaming at their tellies over the mystery of Jo Davidson’s blood relative.

Gogglebox is available to watch on All4.
