Gogglebox viewers have blasted Mary Killen for her comments after Boris Johnson’s recent Good Morning Britain interview.

On Friday night’s episode of the hit Channel 4 show, partners Giles and Mary were seen watching the Prime Minister’s appearance on the ITV breakfast show – his first for five years – earlier last week when he sat down to chat with Susanna Reid.

During the interview, she asked Johnson if he was an ‘honest’ man and quizzed him on the cost of living crisis, bringing up a 77-year-old woman called Elsie who eats only one meal a day and ride the bus all day to avoid using energy at home.

Watching the interview, Mary said: ‘I am very sorry for Elsie but Susanna is making out it is Boris’ fault and like he doesn’t care.’

Giles asked her whose fault it was, and she replied: ‘Well it is the global situation.’

The exchange has left many viewers fuming, with plenty of fans criticising Mary for her comments.

One viewer tweeted: ‘Can someone remind Mary that Boris Johnson runs this country and it absolutely IS his problem and his fault that an elderly women is riding a bus to keep warm bcos her heating bill has risen more than 4x! (sic)’

Another said: ‘Mary is so out of touch! If you can’t hold to account the Prime Minister of the country, what are we supposed to do? They’re the leaders of the country. They are supposed to support the average human in times of need.’

And another viewer added: ‘love Gogglebox but if mary doesn’t stop defending boris i’ll be writing a strongly worded email (sic)’

Susanna had received high praise for the way she held the PM to account during their talk, as she said to him: ‘There are claims of sexism in Parliament, partygate investigations continue and there is a rising cost of living crisis. Prime Minister, we have a lot to get through.’

A Twitter user wrote: ‘Susanna Reid showing others how to conduct an incisive interview. Not allowing waffle. Excellent journalism.’

After the interview, the GMB co-host jokingly admitted that she was ‘surprised she wasn’t thrown out’ after putting the politician to the test.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, she said: ‘Yeah, it was remarkable speaking to him. Look, it’s been almost five years since Boris Johnson has appeared on Good Morning Britain and for just over two of those years he has been Prime Minister.’

She added: ‘Fascinating talking to him – you know, it’s historic even being in this building, even being in this room but of course the weight of those partygate fines hangs over these premises.’
