Tributes are coming in following the sad news of Mary’s death (Pictures: Channel 4)
Gogglebox star Sophie Sandiford has led the tributes to Mary Cook after the show icon died at the age of 92.
Channel 4 announced the news in a statement this morning, confirming that she had died in hospital at the weekend while surrounded by her family.
She had been a regular on the series since 2016 and appeared with her best friend Marina Wingrove from the retirement village where they first met.
Sophie, who stars on the show alongside brother Pete, led the tributes by sharing a message on social media, writing: ‘Rest in peace Mary.’
The broadcaster said: ‘We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.
‘Bristolians Mary & Marina met at St Monica Trust retirement village over 10 years ago and had been friends ever since.

They added: ‘They joined Gogglebox in 2016 at the start of series eight and became instant fan favourites due to their brilliantly witty and often cheeky comments.
‘Mary will be sorely missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.’
Fans were also quick to share their respects following the news.
‘Sad news Mary Cook of Mary & Marina on Gogglebox has died…’ one write. ‘I loved hearing their pearls of wisdom often completely off topic misinterpreted misunderstood & so funny… part of a fading generation RIP Mary.’
Another added: ‘Rip Mary you were a pleasure to watch you will be missed sending lost of love to Marina and your family.’
Mary and Marina became one of the most popular households on the programme over recent years.
Viewers were delighted to see them back on screens for the series finale in May this year following a year off from filming due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
