Gogglebox viewers were treated to an extra character on Friday’s show as Lee Riley and Jenny Newby were joined by a mystery man called ‘Steven’.

As the families were watching clips of Nigella Lawson making a fried chicken sandwich, Lee managed to offend Jenny by telling her that the chicken she had recently cooked was not crispy.

While Jenny protested that it wasn’t as bad as Lee was making out, he enlisted back up to confirm that her chicken was in fact not crispy at all.

Viewers heard Lee ask ‘Steven’ whether the chicken was crispy, and the disembodied voice confirmed that it wasn’t as Jenny got angrier and angrier.

Fans took to Twitter to question who the mysterious Steven was, tweeting: ‘Who’s this Steven person in the caravan? Or is it the Hull version of Alexa?’

Others added: ‘Who the f**k is Stephen??? Where did he come from??’ and ‘WHO IS THAT GHOST JENNY & LEE ARE TALKING TO’.

Viewers were baffled why there was suddenly an unidentified voice off-camera, adding: ‘Sorry, who are Jenny and Lee talking to on Gogglebox?!’ and ‘WHO IS STEVEN AT JENNY AND LEE’S, WE MUST KNOW’.

Thankfully, the mystery of who Steven is is pretty easy to solve…

The disembodied voice belongs to Steve Mail, who is Lee’s partner of 26 years and who flew over from his home in Cyprus six weeks ago after not seeing his husband for over a month.

Lee had shared a photo of the pair of them with Jenny, writing: ‘So happy the better half is here from Cyprus now that’s a happy Friday’.

Here’s hoping viewers may one day get to see Steve on screen – though maybe not if he keeps winding poor Jenny up about her chicken.

Gogglebox airs Fridays from 9pm on Channel 4.
