Good Morning Britain presenters Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid have been criticised for an interview with a woman who escaped a New York City apartment fire.
The overnight blaze killed 19 people – including nine children with one as young as four – as the city’s fire commissioner Daniel Nigro described the incident as one of the worst in recent memory.
Richard and Susanna discussed the news on Monday morning before speaking to Winter Thomas, 20, who escaped the fire from the ninth floor with her mother and siblings.
She had previously chatted to a reporter at the location of the fire and opened up about the horrific scenes as she saw people who had died as they left the apartment block.
She said: ‘I was sleeping and my little sister came in the room. She was screaming for me to help her and I didn’t know what to do.
‘I looked out the window and as soon as I turned my head to the window there were flames coming up my window, black smoke.’
Thomas described the scenes as ‘devastating’, before Richard asked her about earlier comments to a reporter about people jumping from the window to escape the fire.
She added: ‘It was like something out of a movie. Kids were jumping out the window. From the ninth floor, they were jumping out the window.
‘I’ve never seen so many dead bodies in my life. I saw dead people and kids lying dead on the floor.’
Some viewers have since hit out at the interview and slammed the line of questioning.
One person wrote on Twitter: ‘Am I the only person who thinks it’s completely inappropriate to be questioning this young girl after the New York fires? Poor thing is completely traumatised and she’s getting asked specifics! #GMB.’
Another added: ‘Someone needs to pull this interview… wtf is this?? the questioning is awful. #gmb’
While a different viewer tweeted: ‘@GMB interviewing a young woman just after she’s gone through tragedy & asking questions like. ” what floor was they jumping from” the presenter needs some training #goodmorningbritain #GMB #news #GBNews (sic)’
Meanwhile, other viewers heaped praise on Thomas for her ability to open up about such horrific scenes.
Another view said: ‘NewYork Winter #gmb @gmb is doing an amazing job speaking right now please tell her. (sic)’
