Gordon Ramsay ‘donated $50k toward MasterChef Junior’s Ben Watkins’ cancer treatment’

Gordon Ramsay reportedly donated $50,000 to help with Ben Watkins’ cancer fight

Gordon Ramsay ‘quietly donated’ $50,000 (£37k) to help MasterChef Junior star Ben Watkins amid his cancer treatment, according to reports.

Sadly it was confirmed on Monday Watkins had lost his battle with Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma, two years after appearing on the TV series.

Hell’s Kitchen star Ramsay, who was a judge on the show, paid tribute to the young chef who died aged 14, in a touching post this week.

However it’s also been reported that the chef’s gesture went even further amid claims Ramsay chipped in with his own money after it was revealed Watkins was undergoing treatment for the rare cancer.

TMZ has reported Ramsay ‘quietly donated $50,000 to Ben in August to help cover the medical costs associated with his battle with cancer’, as the website cited ‘sources close to the situation’.

Ramsay had earlier sent his well wishes, alongside Watkins’ fellow MasterChef comrades, letting him know they were praying for him while also helping raise money with a GoFundMe page.

The GoFundMe is now at over $200k (£150k), and it’s said the money will be used to support his family.

TV chef Ramsay sent his love to Watkins’ family as he penned a touching message recalling their time on the show together.

‘We lost a Master of the @masterchefjunior kitchen today,’ he wrote on social media. ‘Ben you were an incredibly talented home cook and even stronger young man.

‘Your young life had so many tough turns but you always persevered. I adored our time cooking and laughing together on set.

‘Heartbroken today losing my little mate, sending all my love to Ben Watkins’ family with this terrible loss Gx.’

Watkins’ death was confirmed in a statement posted by his grandma and uncle.

It read: ‘Our Ben went home to be with his mother Monday afternoon after a year-and-a-half-long battle with cancer.

‘After losing both his parents in September 2017, we have marvelled at Ben’s strength, courage and love for life. He never ever complained. Ben was and will always be the strongest person we know.

‘When Ben’s rare illness was shared with the world, he was so heartened by the outpouring of love he received from every corner of the globe – especially here in his hometown of Gary, Indiana.

‘We cannot thank this community enough for holding our family up in prayer and for all that you’ve done.’

The statement continued: ‘Ben suffered more than his share in his 14 years on this earth but we take solace in that his suffering is finally over and in that, in the end, Ben knew he was loved by so many.’

Appearing on MasterChef Junior in 2018, Watkins became a firm fan favourite on the show and although he didn’t win, his love of cooking made him a standout star.

Tragically, his time on the show was marred however when his mother and father died in a murder-suicide between the time the show was filmed in 2017 and aired.

Mike Watkins, the young star’s father, shot and killed Leila Edwards before shooting himself. Watkins’ grandmother and uncle became his legal guardians in the wake of the tragedy.
