Alison Hammond’s ‘dead dog’ moment with Graham Norton provided us with one of the TV highlights of 2021 so far – and now Graham has revealed that he found the moment funny too.
Alison made an awkward gaffe during her first stint on the Friday slot of This Morning with Dermot O’Leary, when she asked Graham Norton how his dog was, not realising that it was in fact dead.
‘The last time I saw you you were with your dog, out and about,’ she said on the show. ‘Have you still got your dog?’
‘No. Dead,’ Graham responded curtly, bursting out laughing.
The presenter clearly wasn’t offended by the accidental mishap, and he cleared up any misunderstanding on his new Virgin Radio show.
‘Now, I meant to say this yesterday, big up Alison Hammond she got so much flak for apparently, you know, being insensitive or upsetting me,’ he said.
‘I did This Morning and she said, oh, how’s your dog? And I said oh it’s dead. And I did it in a deliberate way to be awkward. And it was going to be funny. It was funny. And I think she found it funny and Dermot found it funny. I found it funny.’
Graham went on to say: ‘People kind of deliberately misrepresented what happened to kind of, you know, be horrible to her. So I love Alison Hammond and if there was any awkwardness, it was my fault. I mean, I made it a bad thing.’
‘That’s the other thing, I feel like people then think I’m kind of heartless. I was bereft when the dog went, but now I can use it for comedy.’
Thankfully, Graham was able to see the funny side.
Graham was speaking on his new Virgin Radio show after quitting BBC Radio 2 back in November after 10 years.
