Great British Bake Off’s Laura had a kitchen nightmare during the final showstopper challenge in tonight’s episode, with her cake melting just seconds before presentation time.

The bakers were challenged by Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood to create an ice cream cake in the scorching summer heat and were given four and a half hours to do so.

Laura got off to a rocky start in the task, as she forgot to press the button on her ice cream maker to freeze her ice cream. As a result, she missed out on 40 minutes of prime freezing time.

Sadly, things only went from bad for worse.

As Laura was waiting for her cake to cool in the freezer, she could hear an ominous noise coming from inside.

Rushing over to see what had happened, Laura opened up the freezer and discovered her bake falling apart.

‘Got to laugh or I’ll cry,’ Laura said, commenting at her work. ‘What a mess.’

‘It looked an absolute state,’ she continued after presenting the cake to the judges. ‘If I get through it’ll literally be by the skin of my teeth.’

Remarking on the presentation, Prue said: ‘It’s a pity, Laura, because you were so nearly there.’

Luckily for Laura, the judges decided it wasn’t quite her time to leave the competition.

Instead, Lottie was eliminated from the competition.

Great British Bake Off returns on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
