The Great British Bake Off 2020 received Ofcom 111 complaints after Hermine was booted out of the tent in an agonising semi-final.

The baker made a big impression in the tent before being sent home by judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and unhappy fans wasted no time making their thoughts known to the TV regulator.

Viewers were outraged online when the fan favourite was sent home instead of fellow contestant Laura Adlington, who struggled with her technical and showstopper bakes.

Laura was subjected to vicious trolling after the result was announced. Paul later took to social media to defend his decision and criticise the online venom being aimed at her.

He wrote: ‘Those of you who may not be aware how Bake Off works or new to the series may have missed what we have always done on Bake Off judging.

‘Each week stands on its own!! It never matters what any baker has done in previous weeks.’

Hermine also urged viewers not to be unkind in her name after leaving the tent, and shared her support for Laura and the remaining bakers.

After leaving the programme, Hermine left a hilarious and moving message reminding people that ‘being yourself is all you need to be’. ‘

The news comes after Peter Sawkins was named the youngest winner in Bake Off history earlier this week, beating Laura and Dave Friday in the final.

The Great British Bake off can be streamed on All4.
