Great British Bake Off 2020: Peter Sawkins celebrates historic win with thankful Instagram post

Baker Peter Sawkins is feeling ‘giddy’ after being named the winner of The Great British Bake Off 2020, becoming the youngest person ever to win the competition.

On Tuesday evening, avid Bake Off fans witnessed Peter go head to head against Laura Adlington and Dave Friday in a battle to be crowned the winner of the show’s 11th series.

Following a custard slice signature and a walnut whirls technical, it all came down to the showstopper, with Peter and Dave the frontrunners as they placed all their concentration on creating their extravagant dessert towers.

In the end, it was Peter who impressed judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood the most throughout the final, with the 20-year-old receiving the coveted cake stand in front of a crowd of people who had been working in a bubble on the show behind the scenes.

In a post shared on Instagram, Peter shared his ‘thanks and appreciation’ for all who have supported him.

‘I am that giddy kid right now,’ the student wrote.

‘For everyone that I need to thank, I hope you know how much I appreciate you. I don’t think I have the capacity right now to properly express my thanks and appreciation so I shall leave it at this. Much love.’

The photographs Peter shared on Instagram showed him wearing a Bake Off-branded royal blue jumper, which we have no doubt numerous viewers will be extremely envious of.

In the first picture, he is holding his Bake Off cake stand with a chocolate cake covered in raspberries on top, like the one featured in the show’s title sequence.

In the second, he is showing the empty cake stand to the camera, beaming from ear to ear.

Several former Bake Off contestants commented on Peter’s post, including 2018 winner Rahul Mandal, who wrote: ‘Well done my boy!!! What an amazing baker you are! Just brilliant! Congratulations!!!’

Peter’s fellow finalist Laura added: ‘So so proud of you!!! Congratulations lovely Peter.’

Following his win on last night’s episode, Peter said: ‘I can’t quite believe that I’m here.’

‘I can’t quite believe I made it on the show, I can’t quite believe the show happened,’ he told the camera.

‘This is going to be a really huge chapter of my life.’
