Laura Adlington has revealed she almost didn’t go on Great British Bake Off over fears of trolling over her weight and previously considered getting a gastric sleeve fitted.
She revealed that she had considered undergoing the operation a few months before the show began after she and her husband Matt, who married in 2018, struggled to conceive.
Laura, 31, told the Daily Mail: ‘We wanted to start a family and it wasn’t happening. The doctor said losing weight would help, and suggested bariatric surgery.
‘I came close to doing it. Very close. Matt was supportive but said it had to be my decision.
‘In the end, I couldn’t do it. I just felt I needed to get my head sorted out before I got my stomach stapled.
‘For me, I feel the eating is more of a psychological issue. Physically changing my stomach size wasn’t going to be the answer.’
Laura also picked up some celebrity fans along the way, with Game Of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke sliding into her DMs to send her messages of support.
Appearing on spin-off show Bake Off: Extra Slice, Laura told host Jo Brand: ‘Emilia Clarke, mother of Dragons from Game of Thrones, sent me a message.
‘[She] just said, “Laura, me and my friends love you. Thanks for brightening up our lockdown. We hope you win.”
‘I think she called me a “baking queen”. So my life is now complete, quite frankly. Friends with Matt Lucas and Emilia Clarke. Doesn’t get better than that, does it?’
Laura was also branded the most relatable contestant of this year’s series by viewers for her chaotic appearance on the show, which also led to her popping her head in the freezer for a couple of moments peace during a stressful bake.
