Great British Bake Off viewers call for more Tom Allen as he steps in for absent Noel Fielding

Great British Bake Off viewers are demanding Tom Allen become a permanent fixture on the show when he stepped in for absent Noel Fielding.

Noel was unable to film the Christmas special as he was on paternity leave following the birth of his second child.

Tom joined presenter Matt Lucas for The Great Christmas Bake Off which aired on Christmas Eve.

The Bake Off tent welcomed back former contestants Jamie Finn and Rosie Brandreth-Poynter from 2019, Ruby Bhogal from 2018 and James Hillery from 2017 for a Covid-safe special.

The comedian, who normally appears on spin-off The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice, was a hit with viewers thanks to his quick wit and his banter with Matt.

At the end of the episode, he was given a ‘star presenter’ award for stepping into to Noel’s shoes.

He quipped: ‘There was no room at the inn and they said, “there’s a tent round the back would you like to host there?”‘

When Prue told him he’s not ‘as tasty’ as Noel, Tom agreed joking that he is ‘bitter’.

Viewers also applauded the TV star for a great job with many calling for him to front the main show again.

The special episode was won by 2019 contestant Rosie.

She said after her win: ‘I can’t believe it I’m so happy.

‘It’s a lovely end to a lovely couple of days.’

A proud Prue added: ‘She never won star baker and never had a handshake and now she has both of those things.’

The Great New Year Bake Off airs January 3 at 7.45pm on Channel 4.
