Damien was eliminated from the competition (Picture: BBC)
Great British Sewing Bee fans have been left gutted over contestant Damien being eliminated, dubbing him an ‘absolute legend’ and ‘TV gold’.
The engineer has won fans throughout the competition with his individuality, positivity, and, let’s face it, his complete refusal to stick to the brief.
Despite being criticised for not reading the instructions carefully enough, Damien’s skills kept him in the competition until the quarter finals.
However, it was the combination of having to make Dirty Dancing, Sound of Music and Dreamgirls inspired garments that left him flailing.
While it seemed to be close between him and fellow contestant Farie, she had the judges stunned with her Dreamgirls garment, while Damien failed to impress.
In true Damien fashion, he reacted to his elimination by declaring: ‘I’ve had a fantastic time.’
Speaking to the camera afterwards, he reflected: ‘I’m really proud, it’s been a great journey. It’s been like a masterclass in sewing.’
Fans are sad to see him go, with one writing: ‘I have absolutely LOVED Damien every week. Total sunshine.’
‘Really, really, really going to miss Damien. He’s made me laugh every week! And his sewing hasn’t been bad either,’ another added, with one more writing on Twitter: ‘Aw, I’m gutted. I’ve absolutely loved Damien and his almost total disregard for instructions.’
‘Oh Damien,’ another fan lamented. ‘You made me laugh every week, your cheerfully reckless approach to following instructions was glorious, and the way you liked to use tweed for party dresses made the north of England proud. I will miss you.’
One more summed it all up by simply saying: ‘The man. The myth. The Damien.’
Meanwhile, fellow contestant Rebecca was thrilled to earn Garment of the Week, beating Serena for the first time.
Damien wasn’t the only contestant fans were heartbroken to lose, after fan favourite Adam was eliminated in previous weeks.
Viewers even urged the broadcaster to take inspiration from RuPaul’s Drag Race and create an All Stars version – and we have to say we’re sold.
The Great British Sewing Bee airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One.
