Gregory Porter overcome with emotion on Good Morning Britain as he remembers late brother who died from Covid

Gregory Porter was visibly upset and had to take a moment to compose himself as he paid tribute to his late brother on today’s Good Morning Britain.

The American singer-songwriter lost his brother Lloyd Porter to complications due to the virus in May 2020, he was 49.

As presenters Adil Ray and Ranvir Singh played the video from Gregory’s acclaimed hit Hey Laura, the musician became choked up.

‘Did you know…,’ he said before his voice broke. ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get emotional.

‘That’s my brother’s house and he directed the Hey Laura video. I was just thinking of him in that moment.’

Gregory continued: ‘He passed from Covid early on in the pandemic. I’m sorry, I’ll get back on track. What I do in my music is I take the people in my life, the loved ones in my life, the best parts of them, and I put it in my music.

‘If you hear some emotion, some power, some love, it’s them. It’s them.’

Gregory previously said that losing his late brother was ‘devastating’.

‘He was a year older than me and full of life,’ he told Metro’s Sixty Seconds.

‘It was unfair how the whole thing unfolded. I wasn’t allowed to see him before he went to the hospital or in the hospital and then he just disappeared.

‘In those early days you weren’t even allowed to have the body. He was cremated and went away. We had an online memorial, which was beautiful, but I couldn’t believe he was gone.’

He added: ‘We were very close and he was on his way to moving back to California, where I am. We had plans. It has changed all of our lives.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
