Grey’s Anatomy has its first non-binary doctor after E. R. Fightmaster was promoted from a recurring guest star to a recurring cast member.

According to Variety, the actor has landed a recurring role as Dr. Kai Bartley after making their first appearance in Season 18.

Viewers were introduced to Kai in episode three when Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was contacted by a well-funded Minnesota hospital that wants her to join their mission to cure Parkinson’s Disease.

Meredith asked her sister-in-law (and neurosurgeon) Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) to join her to help with the decision, and they met Kai, who is part of the research team in Minnesota.

‘They are dedicated to their craft and extremely talented at what they do. Confident as hell and able to make even the most detailed and mundane science seem exciting and cool, Kai and Amelia bond over their shared love of medicine and the brain,’ the ABC character description for Kai reads.

The character will return for the November 11 episode when the show returns after a two-week hiatus, and several more episodes before the midseason finale airs in December.

Fans have already been showing interest in the chemistry between Kai and Amelia, with some hoping there is a romance between the two.

‘So…can they please make this ship happen? 🙏😍 Dr. Shepherd and Dr.Kai? Pleasaaaseeee,’ one wrote.

Another commented: ‘I am pretty sure Amelia is going to leave Link and end up with them by the end of Season 18. Dr. Kai Bartley is so cool!’

The casting comes after trans actor Alex Blue Davis played surgical resident Casey Parker in seasons 14-16.
