Grey’s Anatomy fans emotional as Meredith and Derek get dream beach wedding

Viewers of Grey’s Anatomy were left in tears as Meredith and Derek finally got their dream wedding on the beach.

The latest episode of the show saw Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) drifting in and out of consciousness as she deals with the ongoing effects of coronavirus, where her mind drifts to the beach.

She is seen standing on the beach – which is her ‘safe place’ amid her illness – with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) as they discuss their wedding, before suddenly finding themselves in wedding attire.

The scene ties back to the couple’s wedding from season five, as they finally get to have the idyllic beach wedding they had always dreamed of having.

Meredith is then forced to decide whether she wants to go back to the living or stay on the beach and reunite with Derek in the next life instead.

She is seen saying: ‘I don’t want to leave the kids,’ to which he replies: ‘I don’t want you to leave the kids,’ before the camera pans out and they kiss.

When Meredith makes the decision to stay living, she wakes up in hospital to her eldest daughter Zola and a tearful reunion, while Derek walks off into the distance.

Viewers were understandably emotional at the heartbreaking scenes, tweeting: ‘#GreysAnatomy didn’t have to make me cry like that’ and ‘the amount of tears i shed during that episode. “we miss you too Zozo.”’

Others added: ‘I’m so glad mer is awake but my heart it crying because it feels like Derek has died all over again, it’s been so special having him back and on the beach’ and ‘I’d give everything to bring him back to life. They were just perfect.’

Derek had died in season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy after being involved in a car crash while driving to the airport.
