***Warning: This article includes spoilers about Grey’s Anatomy Season 17***
Grey’s Anatomy promised the Season 17 premiere would leave fans speechless and that’s exactly what happened when Patrick Dempsey made his shock return as Derek Sheperd.
You read that right, McDreamy has returned and viewers have completely lost their minds with joy.
The season premiere threw us right into the height of pandemic as all our favourite doctors tried to cope with the impact it was having on Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
As many fans feared, Covid-19 appeared to hit one of the doctors as we saw Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) collapse in the parking lot.
Does she have coronavirus? Is she just exhausted and overwhelmed? Has the stress of the situation unearthed another health issue?
Fans will have to tune in to find out the answer, but one light at the end of that tunnel is that fact Meredith is having hallucinations about her dead husband Derek.
The character was heartbreakingly killed off in 2015 and life has never been the same since, so it is no surprise that fans went wild when Patrick appeared on screens in the final 30 seconds of the episode.
One delighted fan wrote: ‘@EllenPompeo with one minute of you and @PatrickDempsey fixed all of our depression and also 2020. They power you both hold.’
Another tweeted, ‘This might have literally just saved 2020’, while one added: ‘I HAVENT BEEN THIS HAPPY IN SO LONG.’
One viewer gushed: ‘@EllenPompeo ughhhh this scene I was literally shaking for an hour straight… this is what we need in season 17!!’
Another wrote: ‘the fact i am seeing the word mcdreamy and it’s not referring to old seasons of greys anatomy is such a surreal experience.’
As another wrote: ‘I got a post-it in my eye.’
Showrunner Krista Vernoff explained in a statement: ‘We had to come up with creative ways to allow our show to still be fun and romantic and provide some escapism. Enter Patrick Dempsey.
‘The beach motif—which will continue beyond the premiere – provided a way for us to live outside the pandemic even for a little while here and there. And Derek’s return provided pure joy for us, for Meredith, and for the fans. Season 17 has been a Herculean effort by our cast, our crew, our writers, and our partners at Disney and ABC – and we are proud of it.’
She continued: ‘But our effort is nothing compared to the work of our Frontline healthcare workers to whom this season is dedicated. We hope our show inspires you to wear your masks to protect them and each other. As Derek Shepherd would say, “It’s a beautiful day to save lives.”‘
