A bench donated from Ricky Gervais’ After Life has been obliterated into pieces by vandals.

Written and created by Gervais, After Life is a poignant comedy about grief, with 25 benches being donated to local councils across the UK by Netflix and suicide prevention charity CALM after the final series aired last year.

One of the benches in Nottingham, however, was found ruined over the weekend.

Nottingham City Council called the incident ‘unacceptable and heart-breaking’, confirming plans to replace the bench.

‘The bench was donated to the park in January via the Ricky Gervais show Afterlife, and quickly became a special place for reflection for many people,’ explained a spokesperson from the council.

‘Thank you to the kind person who retrieved pieces of the bench from around the park and got in touch with us to let us know what had happened.

‘We really want to replace the bench and are working on how we could make it happen – watch this space!’

In After Life, Gervais character Tony is often shown contemplating on a bench at the churchyard where his wife was buried.

The benches are inscribed with a quote from the third series: ‘Hope is Everything.’

Gervais previously said: ‘We hope the benches will create a lasting legacy for After Life, as well as become a place for people to visit, and we are thrilled to be associated with Calm and the great work they do.’

Calm chief executive Simon Gunning said: ‘Park benches provide opportunities to reflect, talk to someone, sit shoulder to shoulder with someone and get things off your chest.

‘That is why we’re delighted to team up with Netflix to put benches in parks across the country – inscribed with that crucial line from the show, “Hope is everything” – to help people have those conversations and to show it’s normal to have those feelings.’

After Life is available to stream on Netflix now.
