Yasmin Finney, one of Heartstopper’s breakout performers and a novice to Doctor Who, has spoken out about her dating life.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan UK with her castmates from the uplifting Netflix series, the 19-year-old confessed that she isn’t sure whether love is in her future, adding that guys ‘let her down all the time’.
Yasmin, who portrays Elle in Heartstopper, spoke with Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), and Rhea Norwood (Imogen) ahead of the show’s highly anticipated season 2 return next month.
When questioned about their own dating experiences, she voiced concern about ‘lessening’ herself for the sake of others.
‘I don’t think I’m ever going to fall in love. I’m too sure of myself to lessen myself for any other person that isn’t “with me”,’ she told the publication.
‘It’s what [singer] Eartha Kitt said, “I want to fall in love with myself and…I want someone to share me, with me.” But it’s difficult. Men let me down all the time.’
While Kizzy admitted to ‘falling in love really easy’ and ‘being smitten with individuals,’ she stressed the great relationships and affection she had for her pals.
Rhea went on to say that the love she has felt in her friendships has been “the most beautiful, transformational thing” in her relationship, and that she is “completely in love” with her pals.
Meanwhile, Corinna said that while she was ‘going to say that my love record is a disaster’, she actually finds that she discovers ‘love in the everyday relationships you have with people as well’.
Yasmin reflected on the significant influence that Heartstopper has had since it debuted on Netflix in 2022, recalling how, at the age of 17, she was “simply pleased to play this great trans kid who’s living genuinely.”
The actress described the reaction to her sweet-natured character as “mind-blowing,” adding that Elle will always be her “idol.”
Yasmin added that she hopes to create a campaign to assist those suffering with body dysmorphia and gender dysmorphia after it took her a ‘long time’ to grow in love with her own body, ahead of her debut as Rose in the new Doctor Who season.
In the new season of Heartstopper, fans will see Elle’s relationship with Tao (William Gao) go even further as the two consider if they can ever take their friendship to the next level.
Meanwhile, Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) maintain their affair despite a school trip to Paris and other major events in their school year.
The full interview, conducted by Munroe Bergdorf, can be read in the Aug/Sept issue of Cosmopolitan UK, on sale from July 25.
Heartstopper season 2 premieres on Thursday August 3 on Netflix.
