AJ Pritchard waited outside hospital all night after his girlfriend was rushed to A&E having suffered third-degree burns when a social media stunt went terribly wrong.
Abbie Quinnen’s hair, skin and clothing set alight in January when the couple had been filming themselves trying to show how a glass bottle could be cut in half to be used as a vase.
The ‘hack’ involved dipping a rope into a flammable chemical, wrapping it around the bottle and lighting a flame. However, the glass exploded during the dangerous stunt and engulfed Abbie’s upper body in flames.
Recalling the horror accident to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning, AJ said he so desperately wanted to be by Abbie’s bedside but coronavirus restrictions meant he was prevented from doing so.
Instead, he waited outside the hospital overnight.
‘I sat outside hospital all night,’ AJ revealed, after saying he was left feeling ‘helpless’.
‘I didn’t know what to do. I just couldn’t leave her. I couldn’t go into the hospital because of Covid. I just waited for her. She stayed in hospital for five nights.’
Abbie, 23, was admitted to intensive care before being transferred to Chelsea and Westminster’s specialist burns unit.
She has made 20 hospital visits and has needed three skin grafts.
Luckily, Abbie was soon discharged from hospital – much to the relief of AJ.
‘To be honest, having someone at home and having the scenario where you can hug and you can help,’ he said, before trailing off.
Abbie’s accident was revealed over the weekend.
Confirming the incident, a spokesman for the couple said: ‘Abbie has undergone surgery on her upper body and will continue to receive treatment.
‘Abbie and AJ cannot thank all the nurses and doctors enough for their incredible care, support and expertise whilst being at Chelsea and Westminster Burns Unit and at Ealing Hospital.’
AJ and Abbie have been dating since 2018. The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star recently hinted that marriage could be on the cards for them and revealed what keeps their relationship strong.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
