Viewers of BBC Two show Hospital have said it was ‘heartbreaking’ watching a young son of a cancer patient express his fear that his mother could die during surgery.
During the first episode of the sixth series of TV programme Hospital, which follows the struggles of the NHS in ‘unprecedented times’, viewers watched as bowel cancer patient Judy Nichol prepared for life-saving surgery following delays.
Judy, 50, was first diagnosed with bowel cancer 11 years ago. Following her recovery, in July this year she was informed that the cancer had returned amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Following the initial cancellation of the surgery required to remove the tumour in her bowel, eight weeks ago, Judy underwent the critical operation.
On the day that Judy went to hospital for her surgery, the documentary crew visited her home, filming interviews with her partner Mark and 14-year-old son Zack.
Zack told the camera that it ‘feels like part of your life is missing’.
‘I’ve got anxiety, so I really worry if I’m not prepared for whatever. I worry that she won’t get better, she’ll die on the operating table and stuff,’ he said.
As the teenager’s eyes welled up, he took a deep breath.
Several Hospital viewers expressed their sadness over watching Zack worry about his mother’s surgery.
‘Aww Zack. That’s me gone,’ one person tweeted, while another said they were ‘in bits’.
‘That poor little boy Zack, as the mother of a 12 year old boy that broke my heart,’ someone else wrote.
Another viewer said that their ‘heart is breaking’ for Zack, writing: ‘What a thing for a child to face, the possibility of his mum dying in surgery and not being able to be there when she wakes up.’
Before Judy went into surgery, she said that the previous week, she had a ‘bad day’ when she finalised her will and wrote a letter to her son ‘just in case’.
‘It was a hard letter to write. Just that I really loved him and if something did happen to me, he would be really sad, but he can’t be sad forever, cause his world’s got loads of things to offer and he needs to put it to one side and get on with his life,’ she told the camera.
‘I don’t think anything’s going to go wrong today, but I just needed to do that just in case.’
Following a successful operation, at the end of the Hospital episode it was revealed that Judy was recovering at home and preparing to undergo chemotherapy.
Series 6 episode 1 of Hospital is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. The second episode of the series will air on Monday 16 November at 9pm on BBC Two.
