Concerns have been expressed that Channel 4’s blockbuster 24 Hours in A&E may be cancelled after more than a decade on our televisions.
The broadcaster confirmed that no new episodes of the docuseries would be filmed this year and said it would make a ‘recommission decision at an appropriate time.’
24 Hours in A&E, which follows life in Britain’s biggest hospital departments, has been a Channel 4 mainstay since its debut in 2011.
In the past 13 years, it has created 32 series and over 300 episodes.
The show began at King’s College Hospital in London and moved to St George’s Hospital in South London in 2014.
The series has spent the last two years filming more episodes in the North of England using local talent as part of Channel 4’s transition away from London.
Broadcast initially reported Channel 4’s decision to cease filming on the series, which will affect over 100 staff workers employed by production firm The Garden.
However, Channel 4 assured viewers that certain previously shot but unseen programmes were ready for airing.
In a statement to The Sun, Channel 4 said: ‘Whilst we’re not filming more new episodes this autumn, we have a high number of recently filmed but not yet aired episodes, which means we’ll continue to bring all the behind-the-scenes access from Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingham’s A&E department.
‘Channel 4 always looks to provide a mix of new shows and familiar returners and 24 Hours in A&E remains an important part of that distinctive blend.
‘We’ll make a recommission decision at an appropriate time, once we’ve aired more of the episodes we have already filmed.’
In January, Channel 4 revealed a new five-year plan that prioritises streaming above traditional television, leading to significant changes.
Greg James’ Rise and Fall did not make the cut.
The controversial game show featured 16 average individuals competing for power and £100,000 in a framework similar to the popular BBC show, The Traitors.
Danny Dyer’s reality series, Scared of the Dark, was cancelled after one season.
24 Hours in A&E is available to stream on Channel 4.
